California Closets is a nationally known closet design and organization brand – relied-on for years as a premiere source for homeowners and apartment dwellers to keep themselves and their belongings in-check. And, for residents of New York City, or other urban areas with small dwellings and even smaller storage spaces, it’s essential to make the most of the space at hand.
Oftentimes, New York apartments have mediocre closets, a semi-deep cavern with one metal bar connecting each side – offering just enough space for a few snappy blazers and six dress shirts. But, what is any well-to-do professional with a respectable wardrobe supposed to do with that? Not much. So, looking to California Closets – with locations in Tribeca, the Upper East Side, New City, Hawthorne and Manhasset – you can absolutely feel confidant that their expertise will help turn your small closet into a haven for your storage needs.
Working with the brand is easy. Step one is simple, scheduling an appointment with a designer to come over and measure your closets. We invited one of their top designers to the apartment. She was lovely, and very talented. Using her years of experience and a proprietary computer program, the closet measurements were turned into a three-dimensional closet storage plan. We sat with the designer for 30-minutes post-measuring to complete our closet design.
Below is an image taken of the clothing closet before – sad and lifeless – with not nearly enough options for storage.
After our closet measurements were put into the computer, we suddenly had an array of options to choose from. What style of closet would we want? What was more important? Bars for hanging, or cubbies for shoes? Would a hamper be necessary? What about a shelf up-top for luggage storage? It was all important to create a versatile space that could accommodate the array of clothing and items that would exist within its walls.
Along with storage options, finishes are customizable, too. Clients can choose from eco-friendly wood-like varieties and other choices. We chose a beautiful leather-like, textured finish called, “Maya Bronze”. It added a nice dimension with the wide-plank wood floors inside the closets. After choosing the finish, it was time to choose hardware – or knobs. We chose the oil-rubbed bronze.
4 weeks after our design consultation, it was installation time. California Closets gave a short install window, and it took roughly three hours for two closets. The technicians were quick, professional and cleaned-up after themselves thoroughly. The result? Perfection. And, an unbelievably efficient use of space.

Shelves for displaying fragrances or other items were installed. Drawers for underwear, t-shirts and shorts. A hamper to hide unsightly dirty clothing. Bars for hanging dress shirts and pants.
Plentiful cubbies for displaying shoes.
A sliding bar to hang bags, or the next day’s outfit of choice.

The result after the redesign? bars galore for winter coats, shelves for shoe boxes and a side door to hide numerous shelves that store extra kitchen items, candles, tools and other odds and ends.
Fragrances hidden behind the side door inside the coat closet.
Two hooks for umbrellas, bags and other items.
California Closets even left enough space below in their design to store large bottles of water, rain boots and other shoes. Working with California Closets was a breeze, and for the small investment, makes a massive difference in the way you interact with your living space.
