Celebrating Rwanda’s Fashionable Genocide Survivors | The Uwi Twins

Rueben and Levi Uwi are survivors of the 1994 genocide that changed Rwanda forever. At the age of 7, they escaped the country and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia – finding peace at a time when they needed it most.

Today, years later, they are at the helm of their own unique fashion label, U.T.F.L. (Uwi Twins Fashion Label), and design in a free-flowing, spontaneous manner that inspires fun and bold patterns and silhouettes for both men and women.

I wore their iconic “1987” tee while staying at the Nyungwe Forest Lodge in southern Rwanda recently. 1987 represents the year of their birth. Their faces as young boys, emblazoned on the front of the garment, honors all of the nameless children impacted by the horrors of the 1994 genocide.
