The Fairlwans Boutique Hotel and Spa, in Johannesburg, is enough of a reason to come to South Africa on its own. The small and intimate hotel was a part of the private residence belonging to the Oppenheimer family, of DeBeers diamonds. It sits in the secluded and posh neighborhood of Sandton – in Johannesburg’s metro area. And, once entering the private drive, you feel instantly at home.
Elegant is the best adjective to use when describing this place. Lush gardens lead you into the homey interior, decorated perfectly with antiques and warm accents. The staff greet you with smiles and escort you outside, through landscaped paths, to your suite. Rooms are large and many overlook the swimming pool. My suite was fit for a king, with a living area, bedroom and massive bathroom.
In the morning, guests hurry-in to the dining room for a lovely South African breakfast with a smorgasbord of options. But, careful now, you wan’t to walk, not roll, out of there. High tea is also available throughout the day on the terrace, by the pool. When early evening rolls around, head over to the zen spa where massages and facials delight – really. I could spend days there and never leave.
For all these reasons, Nelson Mandela has kept a room here for years. If you choose Fairlawns, you choose the best. Plain. Simple. Period.
