137 Pillars House, a beautiful and historic hotel at the heart of Chiang Mai, offers guests and visitors and notable and delicious dining experience at their beautiful restaurant on property. The original structure, which was constructed 125 years ago, has been redone and repurposed as a luxury hotel that has made an indelible impression on the local luxury hotel scene since it opened 5 years ago.

On a recent night, I was invited to dinner at their restaurant, Palette Dining Room. Amidst gardens, ancient trees and lily pad-filled ponds, the restaurant opens-up through plantation-style shutters to reveal a relaxed and elegant space. The tables were adorned with candles and flowers and the hardwood was softened by gauzy drapes and linens that were well placed throughout the room. The plantation shutters were opened and the warm night brought-in a breeze that cooled the room, making for a comfortable and traditionally Northern Thai experience.

The chef was in charge that evening – choosing a mélange of dishes from the kitchen’s menu. The focus was on Northern Thai cuisine, my favorite, and each dish was delivered in procession so the table could share and sample them all.  Plates of chicken pad Thai, spicy prawns and mango rice made an impression – not to mention the presentation in its beauty and simplicity.

The restaurant staff enhanced the evening, all friendly and willing to do anything to make our night the best it could be. After dinner, I took a walk through the hotel’s gardens to hear a bit about its fascinating history. I was escorted out and jumped into a passing tuk tuk for the journey home – sad to leave this compound of elegance and luxury. For anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining experience in Chiang Mai, whether you’re a guest at the hotel or not, 137 Pillars House is a fantastic option.
