Hermitage Bay is the epitome of what one might think of when the word luxury crosses their mind. An oasis of tranquility built on the slope of a hill, which melts into the quiet aquamarine waters of the Caribbean. This hotel is so much more than a Caribbean resort – it’s an eco-friendly destination anchored by an ethos of service and charm that is not always common in these parts.
27 suites, built as cabana-style homes, grace the hillside and beachfront – all with sea views. The wood used to build the guest homes is sustainable, and was shipped-in from Guyana – the small country in northern South America. Each suite is decorated in muted white linens, which juxtaposes nicely against the dark, rich woods of the floors and ceiling. The colors are provided by nature – the Caribbean waters, a burst of fuchsia from planted flowers and bright greens from the foliage of the forests nearby. The suites are all equipped with iPod stations, flat screen televisions, incredibly fast WiFi and Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products. But, my favorite part of the suites is the large outdoor showers. There is nothing better than waking-up and cleaning-up in an open-air paradise attached to your room. Hillside suites feature their very own plunge pool, where you can watch the sunset with a glass of champagne.
Hermitage Bay is an all-inclusive property. This doesn’t mean that it fits into your typical all-inclusive cookie cutter mold – on the contrary. This means that once you plop yourself down on the beach after a long flight, you won’t have to worry about signing to your room or pulling-out your credit card until you leave. The food options are thought-up by Executive Chef Desroy Spence. He accesses his garden, located on property, to dream-up new items for the revolving menu, daily. You won’t tire of the same offerings but, instead, indulge in innovative creations that are truly local – farm/sea to table.
For those who want to maintain their fitness while away, there’s no reason to worry. A large fitness center can be found on-site as well as spa treatments that can be done in-room. Also, the concierge can aid in organizing guided tours, yacht charters, helicopter rides and more.
During my short stay at Hermitage Bay, I stuck close to the beach. The crystalline sand between my toes was enough to keep me glued to my chair with a delicious strawberry daiquiri in-hand. What I found most impressive is that most of the staff remembered my name and tried their best to make my stay memorable. Though luxurious, Hermitage Bay is approachable and rather casual – down-to-earth. This is a destination for those who notice the details and want an intimate and unforgettable experience on the beautiful island on Antigua.
