There are some hotels you come across in your travels that leave an impression, in many ways, and you will never forget them. Secret Bay, the award-winning boutique property located about 10 minutes from the charming town of Portsmouth, is one of these hotels. A private enclave of 8 villas – with more planned to be built over the next couple of years – Secret Bay brings the hotel-villa experience to another level.
The eco-luxury villas are built with the environment in mind, but take into account that luxury is key. The property was designed by Venezuelan architect Fruto Vivas, and each villa is constructed of glass and sustainable wood from Guyana. As a guest, you’re instantly captivated by the open-air ease of it all, especially the flow of the way the property is laid out. There is no central lobby or welcome area, but, instead, the entire experience is individualized and centered around each guest’s villa.
Secret Bay offers 2 beaches, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, cooking classes and more. The concierge will organize everything from off-property dinner reservations to forest bathing in one of the many secluded areas of the rainforest. On the island you can hike beautiful trails, paddle up Indian River or go bird watching with local bird expert, Dr. Birdy. I chose to start each morning in my villa with private yoga.
Secret Bay does an outstanding job of preparing your villa for you pre-arrival. As a guest, you will receive an email before you arrive with a preferences sheet. Here you can choose everything from mattress firmness, snack choices, etc. I had my villa stocked with fresh coconut water daily, locally made granola bards, juices, homemade yogurt and more. My villa attendant, who serviced my villa daily, cooked breakfast for me each morning and came each evening to whip-up a fresh batch of cacao tea to help me drift-off to sleep.
After three days at Secret Bay, I fel as good as new. I was reconnected to myself and the world around me, thanks to the abundant nature, and felt truly like I had just experienced something very special. It’s no wonder the hotel has such a high return rate. I’ll be back soon.
