Pousada Mosteiro Amares, also known as the Pousada of Santa Maria do Bouro, is a fascinating and architecturally ironic property at the edge of Northern Portugal’s Gerês National Park.
The building, centuries-old, has been reimagined and renovated utilizing simple and modern materials like local woods, metal and glass – offering an interesting juxtaposition for guests who appreciate art and design.
I recently stayed at this property while exploring the splendors of the national park located just a few miles from the hotel’s front door.
I was instantly impressed with the views over the valleys and village, the design implemented in the hotel interior, the gardens and outdoor spaces littered with orange trees and the kindness of the staff.
Two nights were spent relaxing by the hotel’s pool and dining in the delectable dining room – which was once the old kitchen of the monastery.
I was impressed here with the food, ambiance and casual nature of the hotel – despite it’s obvious nod to luxury.
Dinner in the stone-clad dining room is an experience any guest should take part in.
The menu focuses on cuisine from Portugal’s Northern traditions.
Pousada Mosteiro Amares is a place where one can truly relax and unwind, while wrapping yourself in an environment that has so many stories to tell.
