Founded in 1962, Bordal is a company and brand that has become synonymous with Madeira’s unique and highly-prized art form of embroidery.
Made-up of a band of women at the company’s headquarters in Funchal, with satellite artists located throughout the island, they come together to conceptualize, draw, disseminate and stitch some of the most incredible linens. In fact, Chanel was one of their clients a few years ago.
Items created include: table cloths, towels, blankets, children’s clothing, bedding and more.
I visited their factory in the center of Funchal, and witnessed the incredible and intricate process of planning future pieces. Every stitch is accounted for in the completed works of art, and counted for labeling. Only the silver Bordal seal authenticates each item.
Bordal is not only an amazing place to purchase gifts for yourself or others – but a true view at an artful skill that truly represents Madeira.
