Umami is newer restaurant on the island, close to the city of Mdina, and it will leave you thoroughly impressed with its colorful array of culinary creativity. Umami, in Japanese, means “pleasant savory taste” – which makes sense for the food that is pushed out by this kitchen.
Chefs Luke Piscopo and Isaac Sciberras have chosen to stick to local ingredients, only at their freshest, creating a small menu that revolves and evolves so that diners are guaranteed top flavors each week of the year.
I dined here recently and was shocked and pleasantly surprised at the technique used to put together plates that were creative yet comforting for anyone looking to fill their stomach. Aside from the explosive flavors, the color and presentation here are fantastic. Flowers and brightly hued ingredients added something special to each dish.
The menu offers both vegetarian, meat and fish options – something for everyone. And, the kitchen is always willing to accommodate dietary restrictions. The price is reasonable and the service impeccable. If you’re visiting Malta, I wouldn’t miss this experience. Reference their website to see what menu might be currently offered but, rest assured, you won’t be disappointed.
