Funchal has the ability to charm you at first sight, especially the city’s old town. Set in a lush valley on the sea, this capital city is small, but full of surprises.

Here you can meander down quaint cobbled streets, have a coffee on the seafront or peruse art galleries and markets that seem to hide in every corner.

In fact, Funchal is a haven for artists – and the streets showcase some of the city’s best works.

One of my favorite spots in the city is the Mercado dos Lavradores, where you can buy an array of fruit and flowers that grow wild here.

In fact, Madeira is known for its fruit and flowers – a small Garden of Eden in the Atlantic. Funchal is a compact place to shop for these items and experience all the island has to offer in a short period of time.

Don’t forget to walk further afield into the city’s breathtaking parks or fish market where you can see the famous (and delicious) Black Scabbard caught fresh from the sea.
