Since 1902 the Veulemans family has run Aux Armes De Bruxelles. The restaurant, located on the quaint Rue des Bouchers in the historic center of Brussels, feels like an old-time establishment where the most recently hired employee might have come into the fold 30 years ago. Entering for dinner, you know you’re in an incredibly run establishment. Servers, bus boys and managers run about greeting guests, taking orders and serving homemade cuisine from the kitchen.

Once in the door and seated, you’re invited to stay a while. White linens and tiny gold lamps dress the tables. You’re urged to choose your dish carefully from the extensive menu of Belgian specialties. You’ll find everything from local fish, chicken in puff pastry, mussels, sole meuniere and more. The environment allows you to unwind and relax over a glass of wine while your meal is made. After served, silence falls as you take-in the expert culinary traditions that have been a part of this restaurant’s fabric for over 100 years.

Towards the end of the evening, coffee and dessert are a must. My favorite is the traditional Belgian (Brussels) waffle. It’s served with a dolop of whipped cream and chocolate sauce. What an enchanted evening. When you’re in Brussels, don’t miss Aux Armes De Bruxelles.
