Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent originally hailed from oran, Algeria, but he called Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech home. This fantastically beautiful garden which was attached to his private riad, is open to the public and offers a glimpse inside YSL’s world. The garden is studded with desert-dwelling vegetation from around the world – from varying cactus species to palms and aloe. The striking blue which is known as the namesake “Majorelle blue”, is a perfect backdrop for the desaturated colors offered by the plants.
On site there is a cafe and gift shop selling art, clothing and jewelry made by local artisans. There is also a glass room which houses Mr. Saint Laurent’s personal painted “love” postcard collection, which he sent to friends and family at the start of every year. In fact, when he passed away in 2008, Mr. Saint Laurent had his ashes put into a monument in the garden which you can see today. Jardin Majorelle cannot be missed by any fashion lover or by anyone who wants to see a now iconic part of Marrakech.
