Dolac Market, in Zagreb, is located between Upper and Lower Towns. An irresistible place to shop for the freshest fruit, vegetables and handicrafts – this open-air space can keep you busy for hours. On a recent visit to Zagreb, I spent an hour here perusing table after table, admiring oranges and lemons from Dalmatia, piles of walnuts from the greater Zagreb region and carved wooden kitchen objects made by a family who have been making them for generations.
Although I was staying at a hotel nearby, I couldn’t help but purchase walnuts, jarred honeys and chutneys, as well as two solid birch rolling pins to ship back to New York. What is most impressive about Dolac, is the friendliness of its vendors. People are willing to stop and talk, show you what they have to offer and allow you to sample everything in sight. I truly love markets and believe Dolac is a must-see for anyone visiting Zagreb during the holidays or into the new year.
